What Are Backup Presets?
Backup Presets deliver the ability to customize your default one touch backup or provide multiple folder, file and cloud upload configurations for different jobs, cameras and users. With the option to define which folders the files fall into, what to rename the files to and the cloud destination to queued an upload to, you can automate your workflow into the single press of the button without using the app.
With version 2.8.0 or later users have new metadata options available, the ability to concatenate folder names, the ability to rename files on backup and export and import (for sharing across users and units) the presets themselves as a .presetxml file.
How to Set Up a Backup Preset
- In the GNARBOX App, select Presets from the bottom navigation.
- Select Add New, and Create New Preset. If you have a .presetxml file you can select Import Preset.
- Preset Step 1: Create Folder System
- Select the naming variables you wish to add from the listed options to build a folder name, combining multiple variables to generate a custom folder name. Once ready hit the Add button and the folder will appear in the above grey box in green.
- DATE + provides YEAR, MONTH, DAY options for both MODIFIED (time on files) and CURRENT (time of backup)
- EXIF + includes Camera Manufacturer, Camera Model and Author metadata options. If the metadata on the file is blank it will deliver an “UNKNOWN” variable.
- TEXT + allows the user to type in any hardcode text option.
- SEQUENCE + can be used to sequence file files by typing the number of digits (up to 6) and assigning the starting number (ie “000001”). Sequences are always added to the end of folders.
- If you wish to remove a folder, simply tap the X on the folder.
- Select Next when finished.
- Select the naming variables you wish to add from the listed options to build a folder name, combining multiple variables to generate a custom folder name. Once ready hit the Add button and the folder will appear in the above grey box in green.
- Step 2: Select Cloud Destination
-
- If you would like your Preset to upload files to the cloud (Dropbox or Frame.io), choose Add Configuration. Your GNARBOX must be connected to the Internet via Home Mode or ethernet in order to access and set up this feature. While running a backup with this feature enabled it will queue an upload of the files backed up to a cloud account & destination. If the GNARBOX is connected to the internet during the backup your upload will automatically start. If there is no internet connection, it will queue the upload for when you are connected, even between power cycles. If you would not like to utilize the cloud feature tap Next and skip to Step 10.
- Select the cloud account you would like to configure for the Preset. If your cloud account is not yet connected select Manage Cloud Accounts and visit our walkthroughs for connecting a Dropbox or Frame.io account.
- Navigate to the desired folder within your cloud account. Tap Select Destination to continue.
- Last, you have the option to include or exclude your local folder structure. The default is to include, assuming you have created a new structure you would like to carry over, but if you have a specific destination or uploading to a project in Frame.io you may only want the files to copy without the folders.
-
- Preset Step 3: File Rename
-
- Similar to the folder system creation, you can use DATE +, EXIF + (including original filename), TEXT +and SEQUENCE + variables to rename your files.
- Preset Step 4: You will be prompted to give your preset a name. This will be utilized to differentiate this preset from others. Select Done when finished.
-
Your new Backup Preset is now available for use when importing files. It can now be assigned as your default preset. You can modify it at any time from the Preset screen.
NOTE: Backing up with Backup Presets is currently only available via the on-board screen and not from the GNARBOX Application.
