The GNARBOX 2.0 SSD features several different Backup Settings that can be used depending on your workflow preferences. Backup Settings only affect backups performed using the on-board screen and buttons at this time. These settings can be configured within the GNARBOX App or using the on-board screen and buttons.
To configure Backup Settings using the GNARBOX App:
- From the Browser screen, navigate to the Settings page.
- Scroll down to view Backup Settings.
To configure Backup Settings using the on-board screen and buttons:
- From the Home screen, press the Down button to access the Settings menu.
- Toggle down to Settings and press the Right button.
- Press the Right button again to access the Backup Settings menu.
- Here, you will see your Backup Settings options. To toggle a setting ON or OFF, use the Right button.
Here, you will see options to enable Checksums, Smart Backup, and Flatten Folders.
Configuring Checksums
Checksums provide you with a reliable way to verify the integrity of your files after a transfer. If toggled ON, the GNARBOX will run a checksum type of your choice after every copy.
With Checksum toggled ON, you have the open to select the Checksum Type. GNARBOX 2.0 SSD currently offers xxHash64be and MD5 checksum options.
To select your Checksum Type in the GNARBOX App:
- Toggle Checksum to ON.
- Tap the Quick-Action icon (
) to the right of Checksum Type.
- Choose the Checksum Type that you desire.
To select your Checksum Type via the on-board screen and buttons:
- From the Backup Settings menu, select Checksum Settings and press the right button.
- Toggle Checksum to ON by pressing the right button.
- Here, you will see the options for MD5 or xxHash64. To toggle a setting ON or OFF, use the right button.
In the GNARBOX App, the checksum verification is displayed in the Task Manager next to the related copy task. For on-board backups, a checksum verification indicator is displayed on the OLED screen as soon as the copy completes.
Configuring MHL Logs
With Checksum toggled ON, you also have the option to enable MHL Logs. MHL (Media Hash List) is an industry-standard inventory of files created using a specified checksum algorithm. This information can be output into a log after a copy or transfer on the GNARBOX and can be used to re-verify a backup in post-production. Check out the Media Hash List website for more detailed information.
To enable MHL Logs in GNARBOX App:
- Toggle Checksum to ON.
- Choose the Checksum Type that you desire.
- Toggle MHL Logs to ON.
To enable MHL Logs via the On-Board Screen and Buttons:
- From the Backup Settings menu, select Checksum Settings and press the right button.
- Toggle Checksum to ON by pressing the right button.
- Here, you will see the options for MD5 or xxHash64. To toggle a checksum type ON or OFF, use the right button.
- Toggle down to MHL Logs. Press the right button to toggle MHL Logs ON.
The MHL logs will be provided in the root directory of a transfer once completed.
For best results with the MHL logs provided on the GNARBOX, our team recommends using Pomfort SealVerify when transferring files from your GNARBOX to your computer.
Smart Backup
Smart Backup enables incremental backups. This means you can backup a card throughout a shoot and only copy new files that have not already been transferred.
Flatten Folders
Flatten Folders removes the default folder structure created by your camera and cleanly transfers the files.
Folder By Extension
Once Flatten Folders is toggled on, you also have the option to Folder by Extension, which automatically separates your transfer into folders based on their file extension. A good example of this would be for someone who shoots both photo and video on the same camera body. Choose Flatten Folders and Folder by Extension to have your files transfer into designated photo and video folders on import.
