Navigating in the “Folder” View
On the bottom menu bar of the Home screen, you’ll notice a Folders button. Tap on this button to view the Folders screen.
This screen will allow you to view the contents of your GNARBOX organized by folder and file name. This includes being able to navigate subfolders within main folders.
How to Filter Files
File filtering is possible in both Thumbnail or Folder view.
Thumbnail View:
- From the Home screen, tap to view your file thumbnails.
- On the bottom bar, you’ll see green icons for Video, Photo, Music, Documents. When an icon is highlighted green, this means the file type is currently displayed.
- Tap an icon to remove that file type from view. When an icon is highlighted white, this means the file type has been removed from view.
Folders View:
- From the Home screen, tap the Folders icon.
- Tap the Sort icon in the top right.
- Sort files by date or name.
How to Delete a File From Your GNARBOX 1.0
There are two ways to delete a file from your GNARBOX. The first way is using the Folders view and the second way is using Thumbnail view.
Folders View:
- From the Home screen, select Folders view.
- Navigate to the folder with the file you wish to delete.
- Tap Select in the upper right.
- Tap the file you wish to delete, then tap Delete in the lower left. If you wish to select multiple files at once, simply tap all of the files, then tap Delete.
- Tap OK to continue.
- The GNARBOX will notify you when the file has been successfully deleted.
Note: You can even follow this process if you wish to delete files located in subfolders.
Thumbnail view:
- From the Home screen, navigate to the section your file is in.
- Once you locate your file, tap Select in the upper right.
- Tap the file you wish to delete, then tap the Delete trash can icon in the lower right. If you wish to select multiple files at once, simply tap all of the files, then tap Delete.
- Tap OK to continue.
- The GNARBOX will notify you when the file has been successfully deleted.
How to Delete a Folder on Your GNARBOX 1.0

- Tap Select.
- Choose the folder you wish you delete and tap Delete at the bottom left of the screen.
- Tap OK to continue.
- The GNARBOX will notify you when the folder has been successfully deleted.
Creating Folders and Subfolders on GNARBOX 1.0 and External Drives
Folder and subfolder creation are currently only available during file import from a memory card.
- From the Devices screen, locate and select the files on your memory card that you'd like to transfer.
- Hit the Copy to... button at the bottom of the screen
- Choose the destination for your copy: GNARBOX or an external drive (if connected).
- Next, select Create New folder
- Type in the name of the new folder and tap Create in the top right
Note: If you'd like to make a new folder with its own subfolder for the copied files to live in, simply type the main folder name, a forward slash and then the subfolder name. For example, Photoshoot/Day 1 will create a main folder named "Photoshoot", containing a subfolder named "Day 1" and the files will transfer into that subfolder.
Copying Files into Existing Folders on GNARBOX 1.0 and External Drives
In addition to being able to create your own named folders, you can copy files into existing folders on your drive or GNARBOX. This functionality is currently only available during file import from a memory card.
- From the Devices screen, locate and select the files on your memory card that you'd like to transfer.
- Hit the Copy to... button at the bottom of the screen
- Choose the destination for your copy: GNARBOX or an external drive (if connected).
- Next, select Create New folder
- Type in the name of the new folder and tap Create in the top right
- Select Merge into existing. Your files will copy into the existing folder.
To copy into an existing folder but create a new subfolder, enter the existing folder name followed by a forward slash and then the name of the new subfolder.
Navigating External Drives
The GNARBOX gives you the ability to browse your external drive either in List view, which will show all folders and their subsequent subfolders or in Thumbnail view.
For external drives with over 128GB stored on them, you will be required to view in List view. We have imposed this limit for a number of reasons, but namely because generating thumbnails and video previews for over 128GB of content would greatly slow down the processor on the GNARBOX.
Another perk of viewing drives in List view is that you'll no longer need to wait for your drives to index, saving you time, and more importantly, battery life! Additionally, the speedy scrolling in long lists of files allows you to find the files you want quickly and easily.
Note: You must be in List view to utilize custom folders and other tools featured in the File Manager.
Troubleshooting
Can you delete a file/folder from an external hard drive or a memory card?
Our developers originally programmed the app so that you're unable to delete files from external devices as a safety feature. However, we've received a lot of requests from users that they'd like to be able to delete files from external devices so our developers are hard at work making it happen.
At the moment, you're only able to delete files that are stored directly on your GNARBOX, but our development team will deploy a new operating system soon that will give you the ability to delete files on external drives and memory cards.
How do I format my memory card?
Our developers originally programmed the app so that you're unable to delete files from external devices as a safety feature. However, we've received a lot of requests from users that they'd like to be able to format their cards within the GNARBOX ecosystem. This is something our developers are looking to include in future software updates.
For the time being, we recommend formatting your memory cards in-camera after backing up your files.
How do I create a new folder?
You're only able to create a new folder when importing new files via List View.
Can I move a file to a folder?
This is not yet a feature of our current File Manager however, it's been a highly requested feature and we're looking forward to implementing it into future iterations of the GNARBOX app!
I deleted files from my GNARBOX, but they are still showing up. How do I get rid of them?
This can be a result of a few different things.
- Make sure to empty the trash can on your computer if you delete files on your GNARBOX via Mass Storage Mode.
- If you recently filled your GNARBOX close to capacity, you can often experience this issue.
- Confusion somewhere in the database.
Our team refers to these files as "ghost files". They're there, yet they aren't there! There are two ways to get rid of them. As a best practice, be sure to fully back up the data on your GNARBOX prior to troubleshooting your box.
Clear the Cache:
- Connect to your GNARBOX and go to Settings
- Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and select Clear Cache
- Select Clear All
Clear the Database:
Please be careful using this mode, and only do what is contained in these instructions, as doing other things can mess up your GNARBOX.
- Boot up GNARBOX and connect to the app.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap repeatedly where it says Help just above tutorials and FAQ until the menu changes.
- You'll now be in developer mode,
- Scroll down to where it says Database and tap Drop Now.
- You'll get an alert once the database has been dropped.
- Exit Developer Mode: scroll down to Developer Mode and hit Turn OFF.
- Restart your GNARBOX by powering your GNARBOX down and powering it back up again.
